Different Types of Smoke

There are two specific categories of smoke–wet and dry. The two types of smoke result in two different  soot residues after a fire. A test to classify which type of smoke damage is present must be completed prior to the commencement of the cleaning. Wet Smoke (examples: Plastic and Rubber)

• Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke (examples: Paper and Wood)

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

• Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
